With UEM, humans automate tasks but still manually manage every workflow, while with AEM, the platform autonomously manages workflows based on guardrails laid down by humans.</p><p>In the AI era, they aren’t really competing choices. AEM is an extension of UEM, built on the visibility UEM provides. A UEM platform primarily assists with providing better visibility and control over the devices part of the organization’s IT infrastructure by bringing laptops, desktops, and servers under one management model and one data layer. A UEM platform helps IT teams better answer questions about devices and make better decisions for management and maintenance of the endpoints.&nbsp;</p><h3 id="ee8f6157-c943-440d-a9b1-2f3fd7f115f2" data-toc-id="ee8f6157-c943-440d-a9b1-2f3fd7f115f2" class="text-lg"><strong>What is autonomous endpoint management?</strong></h3><p>Autonomous endpoint management is where the platform uses AI to monitor and manage endpoints autonomously, making decisions and taking action such as patching or vulnerability remediation, based on guardrails set by IT teams.&nbsp;</p><p>A UEM platform enables better decision making but requires humans to actually make the decisions and take action, while an AEM platform autonomously decides and acts without requiring human intervention at each stage of the workflow. With an AEM platform, you set the rules, review the actions, and stay in control while AI agents take on the execution and busywork.</p><p>Instead of surfacing an issue for a technician to review and resolve, it uses policy-driven automation to detect the issue and act on it directly, patching, correcting configuration drift, or remediating non-compliance, without someone executing each step. The human moves from doing the work to setting the boundaries and reviewing what falls outside them. This level of autonomy, however, comes only after the trust is earned. That shared data is what makes autonomous action possible.</p><h3 id="a724fcc6-240e-4e1d-b768-3c15a2ee29d9" data-toc-id="a724fcc6-240e-4e1d-b768-3c15a2ee29d9" class="text-lg"><strong>Do you need both UEM and AEM?</strong></h3><p>For most teams, the honest answer is yes, though not at the same time and not as two separate purchases.</p><p>You need the UEM foundation first. Without one trustworthy view of all endpoints in the environment, there is nothing solid for the AI to act on. Once the unified layer, with unified data is in place, autonomy takes the routine work off the queue.</p><p>Today, UEM has become the norm in the market, and UEM platforms are gradually evolving into AEM.&nbsp;</p><h3 id="267913ae-9878-41ee-8734-91fd0209fd57" data-toc-id="267913ae-9878-41ee-8734-91fd0209fd57" class="text-lg"><strong>How to evaluate an AEM or UEM platform</strong></h3><p>Most vendors offer the same set of features or a similar set of features on their endpoint management products, but the differences live in how each platform is built and how it behaves. It’s important to score vendors on capabilities beyond basic features, so you pick the right platform for your needs. Here are a few things to consider:</p><h3 id="3f6997d4-b2e4-4d3c-96a9-79c34d80e9bf" data-toc-id="3f6997d4-b2e4-4d3c-96a9-79c34d80e9bf" class="text-lg"><strong>A unified data layer</strong></h3><p>Ensure that inventory, patching, monitoring, and ticketing run on the same underlying data rather than separate modules stitched under a shared interface. The platform has to have a single data layer, not just a single login. This is important because a single data layer is required for AI agents to run on.&nbsp;</p><h3 id="320348bd-e162-44ad-a3fa-f53d1f4aa4b9" data-toc-id="320348bd-e162-44ad-a3fa-f53d1f4aa4b9" class="text-lg"><strong>Management depth per operating system</strong></h3><p>Be sure to check how deeply the platform manages each operating system. While platforms might support multiple operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux, a lot of tools are strong on Windows and thin on the rest. This matters because a platform that only half-manages macOS or Linux leaves you running a second tool for the gap, and defeats the purpose of having one unified platform.</p><h3 id="92f7f741-5757-445c-8ef3-35daf379d047" data-toc-id="92f7f741-5757-445c-8ef3-35daf379d047" class="text-lg"><strong>Third-party patch coverage</strong></h3><p>Ask the vendor how many third-party applications the platform patches and how that catalog is kept current. Operating system patching is table stakes. This capability is essential because the vulnerabilities attackers exploit most often live in browsers and third-party apps, so a platform that patches only the OS leaves the largest opening untouched.</p><h3 id="6cd90fb3-26f3-4f19-8d04-21c1bdedf3e2" data-toc-id="6cd90fb3-26f3-4f19-8d04-21c1bdedf3e2" class="text-lg"><strong>Off-network reach</strong></h3><p>Make sure the platform has off-network reach, i.e., it can patch a laptop that has not touched the office network in weeks, with no VPN, and bring it back to compliance automatically when it comes back online. This is an important feature because a lot of devices today aren’t a part of the office network, and a device the platform can only reach on-network is one that falls behind on patches without anyone seeing it.</p><h3 id="bcf5c579-58f8-4430-b483-c4f93d76fd28" data-toc-id="bcf5c579-58f8-4430-b483-c4f93d76fd28" class="text-lg"><strong>Governed autonomy</strong></h3><p>For the autonomous layer, the real question to find an answer for is how much control you keep over what it does. While evaluating the platform, look for the ability to set confidence thresholds, roll out in stages, require approval on higher-risk actions, and undo an action automatically if it goes wrong.&nbsp;</p><h3 id="71828417-500c-4fb3-8c90-c5b804dbc6d8" data-toc-id="71828417-500c-4fb3-8c90-c5b804dbc6d8" class="text-lg"><strong>Visibility into autonomous actions</strong></h3><p>Ensure that every action the system takes is logged and surfaced in the tools your team already uses. The industry is still in the early days of autonomy, and it is important to ensure that the platform follows guardrails set by IT teams, and allows for human intervention if necessary. This matters because autonomy without a record is impossible to trust and impossible to audit, and a platform that acts without showing its work is running in the dark.</p><h3 id="c8c1c9d2-b807-4e78-b6bd-3c50ae1a5a98" data-toc-id="c8c1c9d2-b807-4e78-b6bd-3c50ae1a5a98" class="text-lg"><strong>Multi-tenancy for MSPs</strong></h3><p>If you’re an MSP running client environments, ensure you check how per-client policy, isolation, and access control actually work at scale. This matters because single-tenant tools bolted into a multi-tenant workflow leak effort at every client boundary, and that leak is what caps how many accounts a team can hold.</p><h3 id="982a3aa1-a52b-4669-b683-025691fd1ebd" data-toc-id="982a3aa1-a52b-4669-b683-025691fd1ebd" class="text-lg"><strong>Moving from UEM to autonomous endpoint management</strong></h3><p>Teams have to transition to autonomous IT in stages and let trust build at each one.</p><h3 id="9fe54a5a-a5b1-41ae-a412-5dc0e22dd8f8" data-toc-id="9fe54a5a-a5b1-41ae-a412-5dc0e22dd8f8" class="text-lg"><strong>Start with a clean foundation.</strong>&nbsp;</h3><p>AEM runs on your policies and device groups, so the first job isn't automation, it's making sure the groups are accurate, the baselines are defined, and guardrails are set. Automation built on messy groups just scales the mess.</p><h3 id="769d7bea-de64-4bb7-a1f4-7928cc985a75" data-toc-id="769d7bea-de64-4bb7-a1f4-7928cc985a75" class="text-lg"><strong>Automate the high-volume, low-risk work first</strong>.&nbsp;</h3><p>Patching and configuration enforcement are the most common workflows to start with since the volume is high, the rules are clear, and any mistake is easy to catch and reverse. Teams could start with these, under tight guardrails, and watch what the platform does before widening anything.</p><h3 id="ec193c36-accf-42e8-ad20-2794cb6b25fd" data-toc-id="ec193c36-accf-42e8-ad20-2794cb6b25fd" class="text-lg"><strong>Keep a person on the high-impact actions.&nbsp;</strong></h3><p>Anything that touches user-facing behavior or could take down a production system stays behind a review step while the team learns to trust the automation. Once the logs show the AI making the same calls a technician would, teams can hand more of that work over to the system.</p><h3 id="954ceba5-7825-4be1-84eb-6e6eaba37509" data-toc-id="954ceba5-7825-4be1-84eb-6e6eaba37509" class="text-lg"><strong>Measure against where you started.</strong>&nbsp;</h3><p>Track how long patching takes, how many routine tickets the team handles, and what each endpoint costs to manage. Report those numbers back to whoever approved the rollout as they improve. A steady record of improvement is what turns a pilot into a company-wide mandate.</p><h2 id="a96ebc08-ddf3-40c1-841d-33f40724c5fb" data-toc-id="a96ebc08-ddf3-40c1-841d-33f40724c5fb" class="text-xl"><strong>Is AEM worth it?</strong></h2><p>Most people evaluating AEM are also building a case for investing in the platform. Here is where the savings come from:</p><h3 id="96dcb7dd-363e-471f-be4a-b49ed6548631" data-toc-id="96dcb7dd-363e-471f-be4a-b49ed6548631" class="text-lg"><strong>Labor costs</strong>&nbsp;</h3><p>AEM platforms help organizations scale the number of endpoints managed without proportional increase in headcount. The value is not just the hours saved, but what the team gets done once those hours are free.</p><h3 id="24fd7a83-52e3-4a7c-96c7-575c94de1aee" data-toc-id="24fd7a83-52e3-4a7c-96c7-575c94de1aee" class="text-lg"><strong>Is autonomous endpoint management right for your team?</strong></h3><p>Autonomous endpoint management isn't the right next move for every team. Here’s a basic autonomous endpoint management readiness checklist. You're ready for AEM when all four of these are true. If any are missing, be sure to fix the foundation first.</p><h3 id="330a4086-7a94-4b66-b958-79209c84a617" data-toc-id="330a4086-7a94-4b66-b958-79209c84a617" class="text-lg"><strong>You have unified visibility across the fleet.</strong></h3><p>The AI needs one reliable picture to act on. If your device fleet is still spread across disconnected tools, there's nothing solid for it to work from. This is the most common gap, and it's the right one to close first.</p><h3 id="2dcc2701-376c-4671-8854-9b13e7f94423" data-toc-id="2dcc2701-376c-4671-8854-9b13e7f94423" class="text-lg"><strong>Your policies and device groups are clean.</strong></h3><p>AEM enforces whatever you give it. Wrong groups or undefined baselines mean the system applies the wrong thing quickly and consistently. Clean this up before you hand over any authority.</p><h3 id="15ee3be2-6767-463c-9651-e6426821c62f" data-toc-id="15ee3be2-6767-463c-9651-e6426821c62f" class="text-lg"><strong>You can see and undo what the automation does.</strong></h3><p>Every autonomous action needs logging and rollback. If the platform acts without them, it can't be trusted with real authority. Visibility and control come before autonomy.</p><h3 id="81ff88df-eca0-4289-a0c2-068be216a14d" data-toc-id="81ff88df-eca0-4289-a0c2-068be216a14d" class="text-lg"><strong>The team is bought in.</strong></h3><p>AEM asks technicians to move from doing the work to governing it, and that shift needs buy-in. Forcing it on a team that doesn't trust automation tends to produce shelfware.</p><p>If you can check all four, you're ready to move to autonomous endpoint management.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I'm Matt Lasker, the new community manager here at SuperOps. Part of my job this fall has been planning our IT Leader Roadshow, and that meant sitting down and actually reading the research on how AI is changing this job, not the vendor pitch version, the survey version, the one that asks people who do this work every day what's really going on.</p><p>What I found didn't match the demos I've sat through. Here's what six different surveys say, and what I think it means if you're the one holding the pager.</p><h2 id="3ac041ac-d55a-475a-9eec-3be7f6e43cda" data-toc-id="3ac041ac-d55a-475a-9eec-3be7f6e43cda" class="text-xl">Your workload didn't get lighter. It got heavier.</h2><p>Every vendor pitch promises AI clears your plate. The data says otherwise for most people. A 2026 survey of 844 IT professionals found that 52% report their workload has actually increased since adopting AI, and another 19% say it's stayed about the same. Barely anyone reports it getting lighter.</p><p>That's not because the tools don't work. The same survey found real time savings, 2.7 to 3.3 hours a week on specific tasks like triage and documentation. But faster tickets and a lighter day turned out to be two different things. A survey of more than 1,600 full-time U.S. workers found people spend about 90 minutes a day with AI tools, roughly 47 days a year. Nearly half of that time, about 20 working days annually, goes to fixing its errors or rewriting prompts instead of doing the actual work.</p><p>It's common enough now to have its own name: workslop.</p><p>The time AI saves is real. So is the time it costs you cleaning up after it. I get it, I've heard it in plenty of conversations while planning this roadshow. A 2026 global survey of nearly 12,000 workers found 40% fear AI will make their job obsolete, up from 28% just two years earlier.</p><p>But when a sociologist went and actually asked 1,250 U.S. workers what had happened to them personally since 2023, the numbers looked nothing like the fear. Only 3% said they'd lost a job to AI. Meanwhile 6% landed a new AI-related role, and 9% got an AI-related promotion.</p><p>Four years after ChatGPT showed up, AI hasn't produced the mass displacement either the optimists or the pessimists predicted. That's not a bug.</h2><p>There's a version of this conversation, usually the one leadership hears, where admins are handing off decisions to AI wholesale. The data I found says otherwise. A 2026 survey on AI in IT found just 16% of organizations say they fully trust AI to make and execute decisions on its own. Another 36% say AI recommends but a human still decides everything, and 22% let AI act autonomously only in narrow, specific scenarios.</p><p>The trend is moving, just not toward full autonomy. 62% of respondents say their own trust in AI has grown over the last year, against just 5% who say it's dropped. Trust is going up. Full autonomy still isn't the norm anywhere. Half the workforce is training itself anyway.</h2><p>A late-2025 survey of more than 27,000 digital workers and 1,225 employers found that roughly two-thirds of employers invested in AI tools over the past year. But only about half of tech professionals said their employer actually prepared them to use it. The other half are funding their own courses, docs, and YouTube time on their own clock.</p><p>If that's you, you're not behind. You're the majority. It's about where knowledge lives on a team now. The same BambooHR-sourced survey found that a third of workers, 33%, say organizational knowledge transfer now happens primarily through AI tools instead of through colleagues. And 27% said they'd rather ask an AI a question than admit to a coworker that they needed help.</p><p>That one gave me pause. It's not a tools problem. AI is saving real, measurable time on specific tasks. It is not, for most IT admins, adding up to a lighter workload, because the saved hours are being reinvested in cleanup, verification, and work that didn't exist before. Fear about job security is outpacing the actual evidence of displacement. Trust is rising, slowly, but nobody serious is handing over the keys yet. And training is happening, just mostly on admins' own time rather than their employer's.</p><p>None of that is the story I've heard in a vendor demo.
